Description | : | Erect, much branched rigid herbs or under shrubs, woody at base; stem 4-angled. Leaves opposite, 2-3.5 x 0.5-0.8 cm, in apparent whorls(due to condensed axillary shoots), sessile, obovate or oblanceolate, apex obtusely acute, narrowed to base, midrib impressed above, nerves obscure; stipules pectinate, connate with leaf-base into a sheath. Flowers white, in terminal or (upper) axillary, globose heads of 1 cm across. Calyx tube 1 mm long; lobes 2, equal to tube. Corolla tube 1 mm long with a ring of hairs at throat; lobes 4, spreading, longer than tube, Stamens 4; filaments long, hairy; anthers 2-celled. Ovary 2-locular; style slender: stigma 2-lobed. Capsule minutely pubescent near the apex; mericarps 2, each covered by septum ventrally; seeds 2, small, oblong. |

Medicinal Use / Activity | : | The plant is considered to be emetic and stomachic. The leaves are diuretic and purgative. Although used as a purgative, they are also used in the treatment of Diarrhea as well as conditions such as schistosomiasis, kidney problems, fever and blennorrhagia. The leaves are said to be applied topically in the treatment of skin problems such as leprosy, furuncles, ulcers, itches and gonorrheal sores. |
