Description : Herbs, with trailing rhizome up to 20 cm tall. Inflorescence capitate. Erect, rhizomatous perennials; rhizome long, creeping, slender, covered with brownish scales; culms arranged in a single row along the rhizome, 9-26 cm long, triquetrous. Leaves basal, 1.5-17 x 0.1-0.3 cm, narrowly linear, acuminate, scabrid on margins in the upper part; sheaths membranous, 1.5-5 cm long, purplish-brown, lower ones bladeless. Inflorescence a terminal single globose head, 5-10 mm long and wide, greenish; leafy bracts 3-4, very unequal in length, the lowest upto 9 cm long. Spikelets c. 3 x 1 mm, oblong. Glumes 4, distichous, basal 2 sterile, small, 3rd glume fertile, c. 2.5 x 1 mm, ovate-mucronate, 4th glume sterile, c. 3 mm long, keeled. Stamens 1 or 2. stigmas 2. Nut 1-15 mm long, c. 0.5 mm wide, oblong, apiculate, biconvex, brown.

Medicinal Use / Activity : The leaves, stems and rhizomes are analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-malarial, decongestant, diuretic, febrifuge and sudorific. A decoction of the whole plant is used as a treatment against a variety of complaints including malaria; colds with fever; whooping cough; bronchitis; swelling pain in the throat. The leaves are taken internally in the treatment of Diarrhea. The pounded rhizome is used as a poultice for sores. A poultice of the fresh leaves is applied to snake bites, furuncles, sprains. A decoction may be used as an external wash in the treatment of pruritis. Ten fresh tubers are made into a paste and eaten with rice; once daily for three days as a treatment for Diarrhea.
