Description | : | Armed, deciduous tree to 8 m; spines leaf-bearing. Leaves opposite decussate, dimorphic, of lower branches ovate, 1.5-2.5 x 0.8-1.5 cm, of upper branches 4-9 x 2-5 cm, thick-chartaceous, hispid above, hirsute below, base attenuate, apex acute-apiculate; lateral nerves 8-10, (sub)sessile; stipules intrapetiolar, connate into a sheath. Flowers 5-merous, pedicellate, solitary or in lax cymes, white turning yellow with age; bracteoles lanceolate, free or connate. Calyx ± urceolate, 1.5 cm; lobes 5, triangular, valvate, 1.5 mm. Corolla 5 cm across, salver-form; tube 1.5 cm; lobes 5, obovate, imbricate or twisted to left in bud, 1.5 x 1.5 cm, thin-fleshy. Stamens 5, subsessile, inserted at the throat, between the lobes, included, 6 mm. Ovary turgid, 1 cm, 1-locular; placentae 5; style erect, 0.8 cm; stigma branched, 0.8 cm. Berry globose, turgid, 5 x 4 cm; seeds many, embedded in fleshy pulp; testa smooth. |
