Spikelets ovate; dorsally compressed; 5–13 mm long; falling entire; deciduous with accessory branch structures. Spikelet callus pilose; base obtuse; inserted. Glumes dissimilar; exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; 1 length of spikelet; indurate; without keels; 9 -veined. Lower glume surface rugose. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume ovate; chartaceous; without keels; 3 -veined. Upper glume surface rugose. Upper glume apex acuminate. Basal sterile florets male; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret lanceolate; 0.8 length of spikelet; hyaline; 2 -veined. Fertile lemma ovate; 4–10 mm long; hyaline; without keel; 5 -veined.
